KABUL: The United States and the Taliban on Wednesday conferred on the implementation of the Doha peace agreement signed last year.
On Wednesday, America’s special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, met with senior Taliban leaders in Qatar, including Mullah Baradar.
In the meeting, the release of the remaining Taliban prisoners, the elimination of rebel leaders’ names from the UN blacklist, and the withdrawal of both US and foreign forces from Afghanistan were discussed.
“The complete execution of all articles of the Doha deal was debated, and both sides stressed adherence to the agreement,” Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem tweeted on Wednesday.
Last week, US President Joe Biden said meeting the May 1 deadline for troops withdrawal would be difficult for his administration.
This comes as Turkey will hold an UN-led conference on Afghanistan’s prospects and the current peace process this month. The Istanbul Summit is scheduled to bring together warring parties and world powers to find a political settlement to the Afghan conflict.
